Union general (1824–1863). Colonel of the 4th Maine Infantry. He saw action at First Bull Run, and was later in brigade command during the Peninsular campaign. He commanded a brigade of the 3rd Corps in the Battle of Fredericksburg, and led General Hooker's old division into the battle of Chancellorsville. In the confused fighting which occurred in the early morning hours of May 3, 1863, while the Federals attempted to regroup after Stonewall Jackson's celebrated flank attack of the previous day, Berry was killed at the head of his command.
Wet plate, albumen 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite photo. Standing view in uniform with the rank of brigadier general. Backmark: E. & H.T. Anthony, New York, made from a photographic negative in Brady's National Portrait Gallery. In fine condition, with light rippling to the left and right edges.
