Austrian composer (1860–1911) whose epic symphonies redefined the genre and assured him a place among the most important and influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Stately vintage 4.25 x 6.5 cabinet bust portrait by E. Bieber of Hamburg, signed at the top in black ink. In very good to fine condition, with skipping to final few letters of signature, a few surface impressions and dings, and some light soiling.

This image was taken 1893, a period in which Mahler was conductor of the Hamburg Opera. That same summer, he wrote Des Antonius von Padua Fischpredigt for voice and piano, one of his key works. In fact, 1893 turned out to be quite a hectic twelve months for the composer, as he also completed most of the work on his Second Symphony. A portrait of one of Germany’s most famous composers taken by one of Hamburg’s most prominent photographers. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
