For your bidding consideration is this No. 9 Griswold waffle iron with low base from circa 1910. Since this waffle iron has a low base, it was intended to be used on a wood burning stove. No. 9 would have also corresponded to the size of the stove eye. These early bases were low, as the iron would have been unobstructed when rotated over an open stove eye. As gas stoves came into fashion, a taller base was developed to clear the burners. The iron consists of two paddles joined with a "ball" hinge. One paddle is inscribed "New American / No. 9 Patented May, 14 & 21 1901 Dec. 1 08/ 979A. The other paddle is inscribed "The Griswold MFG. CO./ New American No. 9/ Erie, PA. U.S.A./ 980A. The paddles each have wooden handles. The base is inscribed No. 9 on top, and 978A on the bottom. The waffle iron with the ring measures 11.5" x 16.5" (measured at the handles of each).
