German Mauser Model 1871 Mauser Bolt Action Carbine, #687, 11x60mm, 20'' barrel, four-groove right-hand rifling weight 7.3 lbs. with an overall length of 39.3'', blue finish, bright receiver, European walnut stock. Adopted 31 August 1876 and developed for issue to Dragoons, Hussars, and Lancers to replace the captured and converted French Chassepot Carbines. Specialized troops such as Communication and Supply personnel were also equipped with the Model 71 Carbine. Those Carbines produced for Prussia were made by Spangenberg & Sons, Suhl, and at Steyr, Austria; Mauserwerk mfg'd the Carbines for the state of Wurttemburg. This particular rifle was made by Spangenberg. This is the actual rifle pictured on page 156 of the book, ''Mauser Military Rifles of the World'', by Robert W.D. Ball. Condition is excellent showing minor carbon spotting to receiver; barrel, bands, triggerguard and buttplate retain approx. 94% thinning and moderately toning brown color, with reasonably clear cartouches at wrist of stock. Stock with light handling marks. Action is crisp, bore is very good. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (Antique)
