British-born actor (1924–1992) who was was offered the title role in David Copperfield by MGM. This film made him an overnight star and he went on to appear in such classics as Anna Karenina, Little Lord Fauntleroy, and Captains Courageous. After a tour of duty with the Air Force in World War II, his film career faded. He later remarked that the millions he had earned as a child had been spent largely on lawsuits, including the widely covered 1937 custody trial between his parents and his aunt. Vintage glossy 8 x 10 MGM publicity photo of the young Bartholomew in a three-piece suit, signed and inscribed in-person in fountain pen, as a twelve year old, “To Saul from Freddie Bartholomew.” Reverse of photo bears collector’s stamp date of February 22, 1936, the date the signature was acquired. Bartholomew had arrived in New York the day before, and in the next few days he would make his radio debut in the role of Peter Pan. In fine condition, with just a couple light surface marks, and a bit of light spotting to left border. A handsome portrait signed during his most successful times.
