Fine Early to Mid-20th Century German Drilling, by W. Collath & Sohne, Frankfurt, #17264, 16 ga./8x72R cal., 27-1/2'' blue barrels both choked Imp. Mod., medium relief game scene engraved case hardened frame, with horn triggerguard, pistol grip and buttplate; receiver is nicely decorated with Germanic scrolls, red deer and wild fowl. Patchbox to lower portion of stock is decorated with standing Jaegermeister in wilderness; lid opens to reveal three places for cartridges. Barrels marked with ''(crown)/S'', ''U'' and ''W'' proofmarks, as well as eagle nitro markings, with top of barrel marked ''Wittner/Excelsior''. Factory checkered European walnut cheekpiece pistol-grip stock. The caliber 8x72R is in fact a necked-down variant of 9.3x72R. Condition is fine. Barrel assembly retains approx. 90% blue with most of the losses just above forend. Detail to engraving remains fine, as does checkering, with only minor flat spots from handling and field use. Horn components remain mostly excellent. Buttplate with very small loss at toe. Rear sight blade elevates when rifle barrel is selected. Action remains tight, bores are excellent.
