Oil on board painting featuring cubist painting of two stylised nude female forms, one stands while the other reclines within a bedroom, their forms at ease and both women gaze directly out at the viewer; the figures have thick black outlines giving definition to an otherwise flat composition; parts of their bodies, such as their breasts, faces, and hair, have been delineated in a highly stylised manner; signed and attr. Fernand Léger (French, 1881-1955) on lower left corner; gallery label stamped on verso, "Feleki Gyula ABCZKEPFESTO"; 29 x 19 inches (73.66 x 48.26 cm). Born Joseph Fernand Henri Léger, he was a French painter, sculptor, and filmmaker. In his early works he created a personal form of cubism which he gradually modified into a more figurative, populist style. His boldly simplified treatment of modern subject matter has caused him to be regarded as a forerunner of pop art. PROVENANCE: Private collection, Europe
