Manufactured in 1859, this is a fine example of a cased Colt Model 1849 Pocket percussion revolver. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the second style legend "{ADDRESS SAML COLT/NEW YORK CITY}". The left side of the frame is stamped "COLTS/PATENT" and the cylinder has the roll-engraved Stagecoach Holdup scene with "COLT'S PATENT". A small "M" is stamped on the left shoulder of the trigger guard. The full serial number is stamped on the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder with the partial serial number ("3432") on the loading lever. All of the visible serial numbers match. The revolver is blue with casehardened frame and hammer and silver-plated trigger guard and back strap. The revolver is fitted with a one-piece piano finished walnut grip. The Colt American style mahogany case has five compartments and is lined with brown velvet. The following accessories are included with the case: 1) Eagle and Shield powder flask with fixed charger and "COLTS PATENT" in a ribbon above two rows of stars, 2) blue two-cavity iron bullet mold for round balls and conical bullets with "COLT'S/PATENT" on the spruce cutter, 3) blue finished L-shaped combination screwdriver/nipple wrench, 4) percussion cap tin with "ELEY BROS/LONDON" embossed on the lid and 5) several lead balls and conical bullets.
BBL: 4 inch octagon
Stock:
Gauge: 31 percussion
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 153432
Condition: Very fine. The revolver retains 50% plus of the original blue finish. The cylinder retains nearly all of the Stagecoach Holdup scene with cylinder pins being battered but flash pitting is minimal on the percussion nipples and cylinder. 70% of the casehardened finish remains on the frame and loading lever with the case colors being strong. 40% of the original silver-plated finish remains (mostly on the trigger guard and front strap). The grip is very fine with 90% of the original piano finish and some minor edge wear on the butt. The barrel and frame markings are sharp. The action is crisp and functions perfectly. The case exterior is in very good condition with only very minor handling and storage wear. The brown velvet lining is in good-very good condition with wear limited to several compression marks and two small tears from contact with the hammer and front sight pin. The flask is very good with a mottled age patina and several shallow dents. The bullet mold has traces of the original blue finish and has a number of small dents in the sides of the blocks. The screwdriver/nipple wrench is very fine with 75% of the original blue finish. The cap tin is in good condition and retains 60% of the brown japanned finish and traces of the blue paper edge wrapping. This is a very good example of a completely original factory cased Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver.
