This pistol appears to be a variation of the extremely rare late war "Solid Top" P38 pistol. The solid top is discussed in the book. The P.38 Pistol", Volume One by Buxton and the pistol discussed on pages 197 and 198, and pictured on pages 273-275 is only 2 numbers away from this pistol's serial number, (27016), and has many of the same features of this pistol. It's believed that these pistols were made in an attempt to make a cheaper and faster production pistol to replace the standard P38 by using the P38 system instead of developing a new system. The idea was to eliminate several complex parts. The solid top slide eliminated the complex spring steel top cover, loaded chamber indicator pin, special firing pin/indicator pin and the separate indicator pin spring. A simple coil spring replaced the dual purpose firing pin/indicator spring. Once the parts were eliminated, the slide could be left solid. The elimination of these parts made the machining of the slides interior considerably simpler and the other parts unique to this modification were easily made, cheaper pieces. Once the pieces were eliminated, there was no need for the high, open top and the excess metal could be eliminated by milling the top flat. The pistol in Buxton's book has the top of the slide milled down to a flat top. This pistol still has the rounded top, which may simply be a variation. Also characteristic of these pistols is the only marking of "P.38" on the left side, front of the slide, a single "eagle/359" proof on the left side of the frame and barrel lug and the matching serial number on the front of the barrel lug, right side of the frame and on the slide. The rear sight is dove tailed and is removed by tapping to one side, and beneath the sight is the two pins that are normally round. The firing pin and safety lever are normal and the slide has the standard exposed extractor. Little is known about these pistols. Buxton states in his book that, "There is some controversy surrounding it with respect to its being original since there are several features about it that can make one somewhat wary." He also states that the gun could have been developed to obtain an increase in production and cut costs and, "If this gun is a true experimental of the late war era it would be the first of the Fifth Developmental Stage of the P.38's evolutionary history." The pistol is fitted with the standard brownish red serrated Bakelite grips with a squared lanyard ring on the left heel.

Although there is speculation surrounding these "Solid Top" pistols as to the true purpose for their development, it truly is a rare piece and would be an ultimate addition to any WWII military collection or German collection.
