Measuring 25 inches in length, the main body of the lock is brass, engraved with scrolls on and burst patterns around the bolster, zigzag borders, scrollwork around the hammer and a scene of two men bird hunting towards the left side. Behind the hammer is "W. STOKES KIRK" in a German silver panel over "ARMY GOODS/ PHILADELPHIA". Steel hammer, with a scene of a dog in the woods around the screw, checkered spur and fish-shaped head. Lock in working order. W. Stokes Kirk, born 1849, worked for Francis Bannerman & Sons before striking out on his own. Included with the lock is a Kirk catalog dated May 1926 and photocopies of an article from Man At Arms magazine, Volume 31, No. 2, 2009. This magnificent piece obviously hung from the ceiling in W. Stokes Kirk's store in Philadelphia.

Fine, with a deep aged color forming on the brass and mild handling marks overall. Mechanically excellent. Writer cannot recall ever seeing an advertising piece of this quality made for a noted American arms and Army surplus dealer.
