Exceptional Deluxe Special Order Factory Engraved Marlin Model 1893 Lever Action Rifle with Scope
This an exceptional example of a deluxe factory engraved, special order Marlin Model 1893 rifle manufactured circa 1895. This rifle features a 26 inch octagon barrel with full magazine tube, brass blade front sight, adjustable buckhorn rear sight, and is fitted with a period 21 1/2" scope with silver eye piece and cap mounted to the left side of the receiver and to the top barrel flat with Lyman mounts. The barrel and magazine are blue and the remaining parts casehardened. The rifle features unusual special order numbers 5, 10 and 15 engraving. The breech end of the barrel is decorated with a grade 5 scroll engraved pattern. The receiver features engraved floral scroll designs with a punch dot background and scroll bordering. In the center of the left side is a wooded scene of a dog chasing a buck, in an oval panel. The right side has a double circle panel with a bear standing on a rock directly behind the loading gate and the bottom has a feather design directly behind the serial number. The forend cap also features floral scroll and punch dot engraving. In addition the upper left barrel flat just ahead of the rear sight is engraved "Special Steel". The top barrel flat is marked with the standard two line address/patent dates, "32-40" at the breech and "MODEL / 1893" in an oval panel amid the scroll engraving on the upper tang. The rifle is mounted with deluxe fancy Class 3 fleur-de-lis checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with a hard rubber Marlin buttplate. This rifle is pictured ( 4 photos) in Brophy's book "Marlin Firearms" on pages 194 and 195.

Condition: Excellent. The barrel and magazine tube retain 95% of the original blue finish with some edge wear and mild thinning on the barrel and some thinning and minor wear on the magazine tube. The receiver show much of the original case colors, brightest in protected areas, mixed with a very pleasant mottled gray patina. The lever retains strong original bright case colors in the protected area near the receiver with a smooth mottled brown patina on the balance. The hammer retains most of the original faded case colors. The wood is excellent with overall scattered minor dings and scratches and very crisp checkering. The markings and engraving remain sharp and clear. The action is excellent. The scope is excellent with the blue finish fading to an attractive plum, the silver has an aged patina and the optics are clear. A spectacular Marlin Model 1893 rifle that would be the center piece of any Marlin collection.
