Excellent Unissued Civil War Burnside Carbine
Burnside Carbine was manufactured by the Burnside Rifle Co., of Providence, Rhode Island, in 1863-1865. The carbine has the distinctive guide screw in the right side of the frame that identifies it as a 5th Model. The barrel, breechblock, loading lever and receiver tang are blued and the receiver, hammer, and buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The stock and forearm are oil-finished black walnut. The barrel is fitted with a two-leaf, folding, rear sight and a bright-finished sling bar and ring are mounted on the left side of the receiver. "BURNSIED PATENT/MODEL OF 1864" is roll-stamped in two lines on the top of the receiver and "BURNSIDE RIFLE Co./PROVIDENCE RI." is roll-stamped on the right side plate. The top of the barrel is stamped "CAST STEEL 1864" ahead of the rear sight. The serial number, "14892" is located on the top of the receiver and breechblock. A script, three initial Ordnance final inspection mark is stamped on the left side of the stock wrist. The Ordnance sub-inspection mark "N.S.P." is stamped on the comb of the stock and the underside of the forearm. Single letter sub-inspection marks are stamped on most major components.

Excellent plus, near new. The carbine is in unissued and retains at least 99% of the original blue and 99% casehardened finish with only minor storage and handling wear. The stock and forearm are in excellent plus condition with minimal handling wear and crisp inspection and sub-inspection marks. This is an extraordinary example of a key Federal Civil War cavalry carbine.
