The barrels have a single brass bead sight, are choked improved cylinder/modified and have 2 3/4 inch chambers with ejectors. The solid rib is engraved "SIMSON, SUHL (THURINGEN)" near the breech end. The receiver, side plates, trigger guard, break lever, rear of the barrel and forearm hardware all have beautifully executed floral scroll engraving with animal scenes. The left side plate shows three deer and a grouse in a wooded scene, the right side plate shows two dogs chasing three pheasants, the underside of the receiver shows a fox with a duck in the background. The trigger guard shows two woodcocks. The water table is stamped with the pre-war/wartime "BSW" code for Berlin-Suhler Waffen und Fahrzeugwerke. An August 1953 date ("853") is stamped on the underside of the lower barrel at the breech. After WWII BWS was returned to East Germany and the guns were marketed as Merkel's and Simson's as well as under other names. It is not uncommon to find East German guns with pre-war/wartime parts that were factory completed years after the war. Mounted on a multi-point skip-line checkered 3-piece walnut forearm and pistol grip stock with plastic grip cap, raised cheekpiece, silver initial oval engraved in script "JJW" and a Pachmayr recoil pad. Length of pull is 14 7/8 inches.
