Sensational archive relating to the first attempted and successful crossings of the English Channel by Louis Bleriot and Hubert Latham, including:

A partly printed DS in French, signed by Louis Bleriot, one page, Societe Antoinette letterhead, October 29, 1909, recognizing 300 shares in the company. Signed at the conclusion by Bleriot, who completed the first crossing of the English Channel on July 25, 1909. Piloting his Type XI aircraft, Bleriot made landfall in Dover after a flight of 36 minutes and 30 seconds. The feat was accomplished just six days after Hubert Latham’s failed attempt.

Three original vintage photos, ranging in size from 6.25 x 8 to 11.75 x 9.5, each showing Hubert Latham or his Antoinette IV on July 19, 1909, the date of his attempted crossing of the English Channel, with images including: Latham holding on to a steering wheel, a close-up of the aircraft engine, and the Antoinette IV soaring high above a shoreline cliff. The photos are each affixed to slightly larger cardstock mounts.

Only eight miles after taking off from Cap Blanc-Nez, Latham’s Antoinette IV suffered engine failure and forced the pilot to ditch into the English Channel, which resulted in the world's first landing of an aircraft on the sea. When the undamaged fuselage remained afloat, Latham lit a cigarette and awaited rescue by the French torpedo-destroyer Harpon.

A gorgeous original vintage 14.75 x 9 photo of Latham flying his Antoinette VII on April 23, 1910, the date he set the official world airspeed record of 48.186 mph, signed and inscribed in bold fountain pen to journalist Jacques Mortane, “H. Latham, 27 April 1910, à mon vieux copain Jacques.” Affixed to a 19.25 x 13.75 mount. Signed just four days after setting the speed record.

Three original vintage photos, each approximately 11.75 x 10, each showing Latham flying his Antoinette IV, with two images of him competing at the 1909 Grande Semaine d'Aviation de la Champagne, and the third of Latham flying at the 1909 Blackpool Air Show. The photos are each affixed to slightly larger cardstock mounts.

Four original vintage photos, each approximately 6.5 x 4.5, showing scenes from the Grande Semaine d'Aviation de la Champagne, an aviation meet held near Reims, France during August 1909, with three images featuring Latham’s Antoinette IV. The event also marked the first awarding of the Gordon Bennett Aviation Trophy, which was claimed by Glenn Curtiss, who flew in his Curtiss No. 2 aircraft; other top finishers included Louis Bleriot, Hubert Latham, Eugene Lefebvre, and George Bertram Cockburn. In overall fine condition.
