This lot contains a set of two photogravure prints, originally painted by Edwin Lord Weeks circa 1880 and 1895. The earlier print is titled "Promenade of the Rajah" Depicting a Rajah prince casually strolling through his cities streets. The second and later photogravure is titled "East Indian Horseman at the Gateway of Alah-ou-din, Old Dehli". Both of these photogravure transfer prints display a beautiful sepia tone hue, and have intricate detail which is attributed to the painstaking process - Photogravure prints are accomplished by taking an original or copy negative, transferring it to a carbon tissue. The carbon tissue image is than applied to a prepare copper plate, the gelatin coating of the carbon tissue than acts as a acid resist when the plate is acid etched. After the carbon tissue and copper plate are mated as one, the plate proceeds to a sequence of etching baths, finally after the plate has been thoroughly washed, the plate moves to the etching press, where ink is applied to the plate and the image is pressed and the process complete. These photogravure prints show good condition. Each piece measures 12 1/2" wide, 16 3/4" tall, and 3/4" deep.
