Early and high quality German flintlock Jaeger rifle signed “M. Gerlach” on lock, and “A. Franckfurt” on barrel. This unusual Jaeger shows an octagon brass barrel, brass lockplate with brass mounts, all of which are finely engraved and show traces of thin gold gilt. The gun is richly stocked in root burl with fine raised carving and moulding around the mounts. The cheekpiece shows fancy intertwining floral scrolls. The metalsurfaces are in very good plus to near fine condition with sharp engraving and good edges. The rifle is in its original flintlock configuration and shows early styling which we would date this Jaeger from 1720 to 1750.The stock shows very sharp carving and edges and just some small old repairs which are perfectly accomplished. The rifle measures 37-3/4” overall with 25” barrel of approx. .52 caliber (rifled). The nicest early Jaeger we have seen on the market in a long while. Provenance: Charles Edwin Moses collection, Ashtabula, Ohio. Est: $10,000 - $20,000
