Deluxe, Special Order, Winchester Model 1876 .50 Express Rifle

Estimate: $16000 - 25000
This is a restored example of a Winchester Model 1876 .50 Express Rifle that was manufactured in 1879. The rifle features a special order, 24-inch round barrel with half-magazine and deluxe fancy grain checkered walnut forearm and pistol grip stock. The barrel, magazine and loading gate are blued. The forearm cap and crescent buttplate are silver-plated and the frame, dust cover, hammer, and lever are color casehardened. The barrel has a folding combination front sight and a two-leaf express rear sight. A folding, graduated peep sight is mounted on the tang. The rifle has a Winchester adjustable single set trigger. The second style frame has a screw-fastened dust cover rail and dust cover with impressed oval thumb-piece. The buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor. The pistol grip has an ebony inlay. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber ".50 CAL. 95 GRS." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel in script letters between the rear sight and the frame. "50-95" is roll-stamped in script letters on the cartridge elevator. ".50 CAL." is stamped in script letters on the dust cover.
BBL: 24 inch
Stock: walnut checkered
Gauge: 50-95 Express
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 9770
Condition: Very good as restored. The barrel and magazine retain more than 80% of the thinning blue finish. About 90% of the special order, silver-plated finish on the forearm cap and buttplate remains intact with some minor flaking. The case colors on the frame, dust cover, lever and hammer have aged to a smooth gray patina. The markings on the barrel and dust cover have been re-engraved. The restamped serial number "9770" is stamped in small numerals across the lower tang between the lever latch and rear tang screw. The refinished stock and forearm are both in very fine condition. The checkering is sharp and nearly all of the finish remains intact. This is a solid representative example of a Deluxe, Winchester Model 1876 .50 Express Rifle.
