Deluxe Model 1860 Staff & Field Officer's Sword, by The Pettibone Bros. Co., 32-1/4'' blade, approx. 38-3/4'' overall; nickel-plated scabbard is 33-3/8'' with ornate brass hanger mounts and drag. Light straight blade is of diamond-shaped cross sections, edged on the obverse with floral decorations, military trophy, and the letters ''US''; the reverse side is etched with a similar design, and in addition a Federal eagle with a ribbon inscribed ''E Pluribus Unum''. Brass grip is cast integrally to resemble ornate wrap in place of the more standard black fishskin. Handle is also wrapped with twisted copper wire as additional ornamentation. All metal parts of hilt are gilded brass. Original inverted comb pommel has gone missing. Knucklebow is a flattened strip of brass and pierced for a sword knot at the joint near pommel top. Center of the knucklebow shows additional floral decorations. Kidney-shaped counterguard is ornamented with eagle and trophy of flags. Hinged guard on reverse is decorated with floral wreaths, military trophy, and U.S. shield. With the exception of the missing pommel, sword remains in fine to near excellent condition. Lower third of blade with light carbon spotting near tip. Scabbard retains approx. 85% original nickel plate which has lightly toned, with most of the losses just above the drag. Original gilt has gone thin to ornamented ring mounts but still remains in protected areas. A beautiful seldom seen variation of an interesting Civil War period sword. Est.: $750-$1,000.
