Custom U.S. Springfield Model 1903 Target Rifle with J.W. Fecker Scope and Lyman Scope Box
This is a very nice example of a standard 1903 Springfield rifle that was assembled or built up as a "T" style target rifle. The serial number of this rifle falls into the generally accepted serial number range of the "T" rifles, however there is no documentation that accompanies this rifle. The top of the receiver has the standard 1903 markings over the serial number. The barrel is unmarked and has eight lands and grooves and is correctly fitted with the modified BAR style front sight base with a Lyman globe front sight similar to the M77 with a Lyman 48C micrometer rear sight. The rifle is fitted with a current copy of an original "T" style target stock with a "C" style pistol grip, with short forend and a model 70 or Neidner style metal buttplate. The left side of the stock with a re-stamped boxed "SA./SPG" and the barrel is held in place with a correctly style modified 1917 barrel band. The rifle has been drilled and tapped for a set of scope blocks on top of the barrel and it is currently fitted with an early J.W. Fecker target scope. The markings on the scope tube are "J.W. FECKER/ 5392" and below that is has been nicely marked "USMC PROPERTY". The markings appear to be milled into the tube and although not authenticated they are of the correct style. The scope is accompanied by an unmarked Lyman style wooden scope box. The rifle has been given a very nice high polished blue finish and the scope retains it original pre-war style blue finish and the stock has a nice oil finish. The consignors notes state this type scope is discussed on page 109 and 110 of the book "U.S. Marine Crop Scout-Sniper For WWII and Korea" by Peter Senich. The rifle was also reportedly obtained from a retired Federal Judge from Washington D.C., and was part of a U.S.M.C. display in D.C..
