This is a unique example of a Pre-war Colt Single Action Revolver that has been fitted with the deluxe modifications as popularized by Elmer Keith in the 1930s and 1950s. This gun is accompanied by a Colt factory letter dated Sept. 2001, listing this pistol as being shipped to Harper and Reynolds Company in LA California in March 1928 as a single gun shipment, with a blue/case color finish, 5 1/2 inch barrel in 38 COLT. In addition to that letter, this lot is accompanied by a letter from a noted dealer and Colt Collector (Dick Burdick) who also supports the theory that the work on the pistol was performed by the King Gun Sight company (of LA California) under the direct special order of Elmer Keith, probably in the 1940s or early 1950s. If you are not familiar with who Elmer Keith, he was a noted pistol and rifle shot who pioneered and wrote several book on quick draw techniques and shooting instruction in the early 1920s through the late 1930s. He was also an accomplished Gun magazine and book writer, authoring several books on dangerous game hunting based on his life experiences in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. By the continual use of handguns, he developed and popularized numerous improvements to the Colt SAA, the gun on which he grew up. These improvements were extremely popular and desirable by any individual who would have to carry a Colt SAA, for protection, as you remember during the 1930s and 1940s the revolver was still King, as the semi-automatic pistol was just starting to come into it's own. He was also well known by many of the giants in the firearms/shooting industry during this time, such as J. H Fitzgerald (the Colt Company Master pistol shot, gun designer, and salesman) Ed McGivern, the true quick draw artist and Bill Toney, the master pistol shot who was also a member of the US Border and a master pistol shot on their US Border Pistol Team. The improvements noted on this pistol conform exactly to those promoted by Elmer Keith and are as follows; 1) on this pistol, the original Colt SAA barrel was replaced with a Colt New Service 5 3/4 inch, medium weight barrel which gives the pistol a better overall weight and handling/balance in this caliber (38), 2) The gun has been rechambered in one of the Newly improved cartridges during this time, the "357 Magnum" cartridge. The right side of the barrel is marked "COLT'S MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A and the left side is marked "NEW SERVICE 38 SPECIAL / & .357 MAGNUM". 3) the top strap has been expertly milled (length wise) and a S&W adjustable target sight has been expertly installed, 4) an original "King Company" custom front side base and blade were installed, over the top of the original new Service front sight on the barrel. This sight also has the small undercut behind the sight blade that houses the patented "King" reflective mirror. 5) the hammer was reshaped to a lower "Bisley" pattern, with a wide beavertail type fully checkered hammer spur, 6) a slightly wider custom trigger has been installed, that also has been checkered on the face of the trigger 7) a bushed free floating (and removable) firing pin has been installed in the frame and correspondingly the hammer face has been cut back giving the hammer a faster hammer fall speed for improved shot placement 8) the complete action has been hand tuned and the trigger pull reduced to something like 1/2 - 1 lb pull, 9) the pistol was fitted with a custom six shot heavy cylinder with recessed cartridge rims in the new 357 Magnum cartridge. 10) In addition, this pistol has been fitted with an original Colt 1860 pattern back strap with the original trigger guard lengthened so that they are of the same length. For those of you NOT familiar with this last modification, it was one of the best improvement ever introduced on a Colt SAA as the standard short grip pattern was one of the major shortcomings of the SAA series. 11) The pistol was then fitted with a set of custom (real Ivory) full length grips that has the small gold medallion inset on each side with the initials "E and K" inside, obviously denoting Elmer Keith. The left side of the frame has the Colt two line patent and address markings with the Colt Rampant Horse directly behind that with only the underside of the frame and trigger guard under the grip being serial numbered, 351868.
BBL: 5 3/4 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 357 magnum
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips: ivory
Serial Number: 351868
Condition: Very good as custom modified overall with half of the blued finish still remaining mostly on the barrel and cylinder with the grip straps and trigger guard having thinned and browned out completely. The frame retains traces of the original case colors mostly in the protected area. The grips are in good to very good condition with a nice old age, light yellow color overall, which have shrunk slight around the frame area from age and which show some minor age cracks towards the top. This pistol was obviously not a gun case queen or sat in some closet somewhere and never used, however even after all this time the action is just super smooth and super tight, and would probably still be very accurate. Certainly a highly desirable and very collectable early Colt single action pistol with highly desirable and scarce Elmer Keith modifications.
