Custer’s Appomattox Campaign Silk Flag chard, handmade by Elizabeth Custer & delivered to him on the battlefield in the midst of battle at Dinwiddie Court House in March 31, 1865. On the next day at the Five Forks battle, the flag bearer carrying this flag was mortally wounded and the lower half of the Guidon was shot out with Elizabeth Custer’s initials. Hence the loose shards fallen off the flag in storage. The flag was sold in 2006 and this lot contains a blue silk segment along with an annotated envelope with hand written notes by Elizabeth Custer stating Surrender Appomatax Court House. On reverse are several notes as Mrs. Custer in her researches was known to do. One says “Did A. capture the first flag in the Civil War?” (A. = Autie, her nickname for Custer). Also, includes a leather bound copy of the flag story with rock solid provenance, as the flag sold for $750,000 at auction.
