The lot features a large and exceptionally attractive pipe tomahawk with beaded drop from the Crow Native American Indians and dating to circa 18601870’s. The excellent example is from the Ben Thompson collection and is truly a rare find. The Plains style pipe tomahawk is attributed to the Crow Indians and features a brass head with two-tiered step to the double chevron eyelet hole and tall pipe bowl. The solid wood haft is decorated with old faded hot file branding iron accents and very artful brass trade tack designs. In between each trade tack design shows a green mineral pigment ocher painted area. The tomahawk shows an Indian tanned hide wrap with a beaded drop attached. The beaded drop is likely a later addition, most likely added to the piece circa early 1900’s. The drop shows an Indian brain tanned buckskin and Buffalo hide fringe construction with early red wool trade clothe and exceptional traditional geometric beadwork. The beadwork is all glass trade seed beads in the correct Crow colors and stylings with a sky padre light blue background with chalk white border and greasy yellow, black, Cheyenne pink, semi-transparent blue, and red arrow or teepee symbols. The tomahawk is from the former collection of Ben Thompson and shows a fine overall patina. The piece measures overall 22.75”L with a 38”L beaded drop and 7.25”L head.
