"W. C. RODGERS" counter stamped with individual punches around the rev. perimeter of a Bank of Upper Canada 1/2 penny, 1857, with a "C" c/s at centre, and an "R" c/s on the horse (or Mount) of the obv. Possibly the personal identification piece of William Charles Rodgers (1847-1917), last Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation prior to, and during the annexation of Oklahoma by the US government. He had been a private in the Cherokee Mounted Rifles, fighting for the Confederacy. An interesting piece of the old west which touches on a considerable portion of United States history. Well worth a bid.
