Colt model 1855 Root 1st model sporting rifle, .36 caliber percussion, 30” barrel, mounted with oiler, serial #620. The rifle remains in original good condition showing a deep brown patina finish with traces of blue mixed in, some scattered light to moderate surface pitting and some slightly heavier pitting on the frame around cylinder. The barrel address is good and fully legible. The cylinder pin is a replacement and the rifle shows period rear sight added in the groove and silver blade and post sight dovetailed in the barrel near the muzzle. The stock is good to very good with some minor dings mars, scratches, and normal aging, but fits to the metal impeccably and shows a nice grain. The oiler is retained but cleaning rod is missing. A significant and early Root of which only approx. 1,000 were made. Original inventory sheet from the Charles DuPont collection notes purchase from James Serven, noted early collector and author, 9/2/1945. Est: $6,000 - $12,000
