Impressive & Rare Genuine June 18, 1776 One Dollar Note “Small Sword In Hand” Issue PCGS Extremely Fine-45
Colony of the Massachusetts Bay. June 18, 1776. One Dollar or Six Shillings. “Small Sword In Hand” Issue, Due Date of June 18, 1778. PCGS graded Extremely Fine-45.
Fr. MA-206. This extremely rare 1776 Revolutionary War “Small Sword In Hand” issue has wonderful eye appeal. It is boldly printed with four massive and very even margins that perfectly center both its face and back. Signed in faint red by Sam A. Otis and in rich brown by D. Jeffries at bottom, written on stiff clean heavy coarse cloth fiber paper. The holder comments apparent masked stains on face and back, which indeed mitigates the distraction. This "Small Sword In Hand" issue, as we sometimes unofficially call it, is due the the use of Paul Revere’s famous Massachusetts Minuteman design with his Sword in Hand and also holding a copy of the MAGNA CHARTA (M-C-A) in his other, which is wonderfully displayed in vignette on the face of this note. Authentic, genuine bills are very rare, particularly this One Dollar denomination which was the lowest “Dollar” value of the issue and only 8,000 were printed and all were recalled in to the Treasury by June 1778 and 1779. The overall crispness of this solid note adds to the significant eye appeal, rarely encountered on notes from this historic issue. Excellent for display.
