Typed contract, five pages, Quarto, Culver City, California, August 25, 1938. The contract – an unsigned carbon copy of the original employment agreement for Clark Gable between M-G-M Pictures and Selznick International Pictures, in the form of a letter addressed to Selznick International Pictures. It states (in part): “Gentlemen: This will confirm our agreement to lend you the services of CLARK GABLE, hereinafter referred to as the ‘artist,’ in the role of ‘Rhett Butler’ in the photoplay entitled ‘GONE WITH THE WIND,’ to be produced by you…that the artist shall not be co-starred except with a recognized and outstanding female star, unless our written consent is first had an obtained…” Signed by Nicholas Clayford, Assistant Treasurer, Loew’s Incorporated, and by Daniel T. O’Shea, Selznick International Pictures.
