This item is an early Civil War Era pack saddle. The pack saddle comes from the personal collection of Kent DeVore, owner and operator of "DeVore Saddlery" of Helena Montana, since 1950. The saddle is built on a heavy duty wooden platform, with a protruding wooden channel, based in the center of the saddle. The service member utilizing the saddle would drape a cargo load over the saddle, setting a strap inside the channel. The saddle is absent of any makers marks, but it does shows custom tooling around the border, and 4 sets of floral metal conchos, placed on each corner of the square saddle. The saddle is said to date from circa 1800-1860, and used in U.S. Military application. The padded undercarriage of the saddle shows repair, however, the saddle does show good condition for age. The saddle measures 17 1/2" wide, 16 1/2" long, and 8 1/2" tall.
