Vignette bust on a double red line bordered mount by J. B. McClees, Philadelphia. Blue 2 cent Playing Card Revenue stamp has McClees's initials as cancellation. Ryerson was commissioned into the New Jersey 2nd Infantry. In 1862 he was commissioned as Colonel into the Field & Staff of the 23rd N.J. Infantry, that fought at Fredricksburg and Chancellorsville. In March 1863 he became Colonel of the 10th New Jersey Infantry, and, like many of that company, he was wounded and captured during the Wilderness campaign. He died of his wounds as a prisoner of War. [4]
