This is an exceptional authentic original Chumash Native American Indian carved killer whale effigy steatite pipe from the ex-collection of Larry Lantz found in Santa Barbara, California. The Chumash historically inhabited the southern California region of what is now San Luis Obispo, Santan Barbara and Los Angeles counties. The pipe has been expertly carved from solid steatite with inlaid mother of pearl. The piece was featured in Lar Hothem's book titled "Collector's Guide to Indian Pipes" on page 42. From the book; "Killer whale effigy pipe, dark California steatite, size 3 x 3 x 5 7/8" long. The Stone is gray-black with some blue, plus cream-tan spotting occurs where original finish is eroded. The stem hole is in the tail and abalone inlays are at the eyes and side fins, plus one on each side of the dorsal fin. Provenance: From the collection of Larry Lantz (First Mesa, Indiana) attributed to Santa Barbara County, California and was purchased by the current owner, a historical private museum collection in Paris, France, in 1999 for $3.500." . The pipe is in good condition. It measures 2" X 3" X 5.75". Other examples of Chumash California Indian artifacts have been offered for sale by such renowned auction houses as Cowan’s Auction (who offered a very similar whale pipe) and Heritage Auctions (who offered various early baskets). This is truly an excellent and provenance original early piece.
