(MGM, 1944) Extensive collection of (35) individual works, a few being blueprints for set construction, but the vast majority are original hand-drawn charcoal on vellum set designs, storyboards, and concept art by artists Ruoff, Webster, Lundberg, and H. Martin, with nearly all the drawings being the work of Harry Johnson(one piece signed by him) for art directors William Ferrari and Cedric Gibbons. Size ranges from 7 x 9” to 21 x 31” with some tears and losses to fragile vellum paper, but in every example the essential artwork is preserved. The key element of George Cukor’s film Gaslight which elevates it from a mere costume melodrama to a respected Film Noir is the menacing and psychologically pervasive atmosphere created by the dark, brooding, confining interiors, which their complete design process is illustrated in this comprehensive archive. Condition ranges from Very Good to Excellent.
