This is an early scarce original Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show circa 1889 program. The program is from circa 1889 and is from the first French European Tour. This is virtually the same as the 1887 London program, but translated to French. This is the earliest of the French Programs and is truly and excellent rare piece. The chromolithograph on the front shows a portrait of Buffalo Bill, William Frederick Cody, with his signature saying, "Yours Truly W.H. Cody Buffalo Bill" framed in a yellow border marked, "Lith. F. Appe;. 12.R. du. Delta Paris" surrounded by greenery with the "Buffalo Bill's Wild West" text along the top and two round portraits along the bottom one being an Indian Warrior and the other being a Buffalo Bull. The chromolithograph on the back of the cover shows artistic scenes from the Wild West show including Buffalo Bill on horse back standing at a cliff side, Buffalo roaming the American plains, Custer leading US Cavalry men into an Indian War Battle, and a grand American Bison. The book features 48 pages of text and illustrations relating to the Wild West Show, Buffalo Bill's past as the Chief of the U.S. Army Scouts, the American West, Indian Fighting, Cowboys and many more aspects of the performers and the show. The European tour began in 1889 and included Annie Oakley, Johnie Baker, and M.C.L. Daly. The "Exposition Universale" area in Paris, France was the home of the Wild West Show for several months. The program provided written sketches on Cody, Johnnie Baker, Nate Salsbury, Tony Esquival, Buck Taylor, Annie Oakley, Dr. Frank Powell, Gabriel Dumont and John Nelson with his Indian family. Programs from the first European French Tour are exceedingly rare and of sometimes a higher collectible nature and value than the American counterpart. An example of this piece recently sold at auction for nearly $1,400. The piece measures7 3/8"x10 3/8".
