Bronze Bust Statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee, by Frederick Volck (German-Conf. American, 1833-1891). Frederick Volck sculptured this original bronze bust of Gen. Lee in 1863 when he was asked by the Confederate War Dept. in Richmond, VA. This sculpture was to rally the troops as well as the Southern people when the Civil War was still raging with no end in site for either side. Volck was employed in the Confederate Naval Ordnance Dept. and took exact measurements of Gen. Lee, as well as Lee's horse Traveler. In 1863 Volck cast a limited amount of these bust statues of Lee, as there was a limited amount of bronze available to the Confederacy, as most of the bronze was used in cannons and other armaments of war. This bronze is from the original terra cotta done by Volck. Approx. 19'' in height, 8'' in width, 12'' in length, weighing approx. 50 lbs, on 2'' circular black marble plinth. The front of the bust is inscribed in block letters ''Robert E. Lee''; the backside is!
also inscribed in block letters ''Frederick Volck, 1863, Richmond, VA''. Condition is excellent, having been refinished to its original state. Est.: $2,000-$4,000.
