Handwritten working lyrics by Brad Delp for 'Rockin' Away,' one page both sides, 8.25 x 10.5, no date but circa 2006. Interesting lyrics to a reflective and nostalgic song, beginning: "Elvis, Buddy, Dion, Fats, Perkins / Chuck, Little Richard, Eddie Cochran / I was born a singer / It wasn't somethin' I planned /All I ever wanted was to be what I am." The last passage on the front reads: "Excited / We couldn't fight it / When we were rockin away / Hitch a ride w/ a rock & roll band." These lyrics hit their stride as they continue onto the reverse of the page: "50 years and countin / As I sit here lookin back on the days / (and still) I see the top of the mountain / is so far away / Still the years keep reelin' / Like the…I've got more than a feelin / we can still make a difference / If we hold on to reason / and never let go / God only knows." In fine condition, with scattered light creasing. Continuing in the storytelling tradition of the Scholz-written 'Rock & Roll Band' from Boston's first album, these lyrics look back upon the history of rock and roll, and Delp's place in it. He references the Boston classics 'Hitch a Ride,' 'Rock & Roll Band,' and 'More Than a Feeling,' in addition to invoking the names of rock and roll pioneers at the beginning. According to Delp's Boston bandmate Barry Goudreau, 'Rockin' Away' was written in 2006 for the 30th anniversary of the release of the first Boston record. It was the last song that Delp and Goudreau did together, and Goudreau released the single in October 2007 after Delp passed away. A fabulous, creative piece from Boston's lead vocalist. From the Brad Delp Collection, and accompanied by a letter of provenance from Micki Delp.
