The lot features a belt knife dating to the 19th Century which has been altered and decorated by a Blackfoot Native American Indian. The piece shows a bowie knife pattern and is thought to have been blacksmith forged. The knife had a good heavy weight and shows a fine edge with rich thick patina. The knife grips have been covered with Great American Bison Buffalo parfleche hide still having some of the fur attached and yet still accented by a drop of horse hair with wound glass padre cobalt trade beads. The knife is accompanied by a parflche polychrome painted sheath that is sinew sewn. The sheath is thought to be a later addition. It shows a geometric pattern, long fringe, and a deer skin liner. The knife measures 12.75"L with a 7 3/8"L blade. The knife and sheath together measure 13.75"L.
