Bingham Canyon,UT - Weber County - c1900 - Bingham Canyon Long-View Photograph :
The image shows a long view looking down the canyon, with a series of buildings crossing through the image. The photo measures 8" x 6", mounted on a brown cardstock matte with a light and dark outlined border. Contrast is medium, with some fading and foxing near the top edge. Focus is good throughout the image. Some spotting is noted in the upper left of the image, otherwise very fine. The matte is in very fine condition, with no wear noted along the edges or corners. "Bingham" is printed in pencil along the top of the matte, but that is unverifiable. No photographer is noted. The photo shows several buildings in the foreground on the left of the image, with several larger buildings visible in the background on the far right. The canyon is located in the Oquirrh Mountains, about twenty-five miles southwest of Salt Lake City. It was settled in 1848 by two Mormon pioneers who were sent by Brigham Young. Ore was originally discovered but forgotten, then rediscovered in the canyon in 1863. Ore was found rich in gold and silver, and the West Mountain Mining District was created. The 1873 arrival of the Bingham and Camp Floyd branch of the Utah Central Railroad changed Bingham's fortunes by reviving lode mining. The arrival of companies like Boston Consolidated and Utah Copper Companies consolidated many claims, requiring large amounts of capital as well as cheap labor. The flood of immigrants made Bingham one of the most ethnically diverse areas in Utah. However, the expansion of the Utah Copper Company (later Kennecott Copper Corp.) into the world's largest open-pit copper mine gradually swallowed several small settlements, leaving Copperton as the final survivor of the villages that made the canyon one of the most culturally diverse areas of Utah [Ref: media.utah.edu/UHE/b/BINGHAMCANYON]
