[ BOILEAU, abbé Jacques].- Historia flagellantium. De recto et perverso flagrorum usu apud christianos [...]. Parisiis, apud Joannem Anisson, 1700. In-12° : [18 (sur 20 ?)]-341-[19] pp. Rel. de l'époque : plein veau, dos fleuronné doré à nerfs et étiq. de cuir rouge, tr. rouges (coins émoussés, coiffes abs.).
Edition originale traduite l'année suivante en français par l'auteur ("Histoire des Flagellans, où l'on fait voir le bon & mauvais usage des flagellations parmi les chrétiens", Amsterdam). L'ouvrage fut immédiatement mis à l'index car, si Boileau défendait la mortification, il s'opposait à certaines auto-flagellations pourvoyeuses d'extases érotiques. "Le livre se termine par quelques anecdotes du médecin Bartholin, d'hommes qui ne parviennent à jouir que si on les fouette au moment du coït" (cfr P. Vandermeersch, "Du bon usage de la flagellation" in Religiologiques, n° 12, 1995, pp. 239-24). Ceci suscita une réaction virulente de l'abbé J.-B. Thiers dans sa "Critique de l'histoire des flagellants [...]" (Paris, 1703). Boileau était le frère du poète.

After full payment, buyers are kindly requested to take away their purchases immediately after the auction or at the bookshop the next Tuesday after the auction 230 av. Louise, from 2 pm until 6 pm.

Packing and dispatching are entirely at the buyer’s own expense.

Payment will be made in Euro's. We do not accept credit cards neither cheques whose total amount exceed 200 EUR or cheques not validated for higher sum.
Terms of sale require buyers to pay immediately for their purchases, which means that lots will be released to them only when full and cleared payment as been received by us
In addition to the hammer price, the buyer has to pay a buyer’s premium of 21%, V.A.T. inclusive, all strictly in cash and in Euro's (EUR)
In case of original art and if the principles of the author’s rights are applicable, an extra 4% must be paid on each hammer price of at least 1250 EUR
All items are assumed to be in good condition unless otherwise stated. Buyers are kindly invited to carry out their own inspection of the lots they want to buy. All items to be auctioned are on view for several days prior to the sale.
Returning an item after the striking of the hammer will not be accepted, whatever the reason put forward. Those items bought on order must be inspected within 8 days after receipt. Any return after this term will be refused.
All items of the catalogue with the mention « n.c. » (non collationné = not inspected) are not subject to return. Neither are those sold in lots (two items or more) works consisting in multiple volumes and periodicals or series.
If you cannot attend the auction, we can execute written bids on your behalf. To ensure a satisfactory service, it is necessary to make arrangements for the services at least one day before the sale.
On every purchase Belgian law only is applicable, and all cases of dispute are exclusively to the competence of the Brussels Chamber.
