217. BEATRICE PATTON

Devoted wife of General George Patton, Jr., whom she wed in 1910. ALS, 6pp, 8vo, Washington DC, Jan 20, 1946. In the year following the General’s death, Mrs. Patton writes to Army surgeon Major General A.W. Kenner who had cared for her husband after his fatal motor accident in Germany. Excellent content. In part, “I wish I could thank you adequately for all you did for Georgie, and for me, in Germany. Through all my sorrow I have felt that more than everything was done to help him get well; and I know that you were the inspiration for it all, not only with your great professional skill, but your ardent friendship. And I like to think that you and your doctors and nurses, and even the dietitians and the medics, never gave up.” She asks Kenner’s assistance in another family tragedy. “...my sister’s only daughter, Jean Gordon, killed herself two weeks ago...She was in a clubmobile unit attached to 3d. army (Red +) and came home about Dec. 1. We heard that she was in an army hospital in Paris for treatment just before she sailed, but we do not know what her trouble was.” Immediately going to a friend’s apartment, her niece committed suicide leaving no notes “and for no reason we can fathom.” Mrs. Patton feels if she could find out what her niece was being treated for in Paris, perhaps it would shed light on the reason for her suicide. Offering a “very tenuous clue,” she cites that her niece’s father and grandfather had both “died of pernicious anaemia; and if she found she had it, she might have wanted to keep from her mother on account of her brother...but if you can tell me why she was in the hospital, I shall keep it strictly to myself if you think best.” Mrs. Patton informs Kenner, “This is the day of the great memorial service at the Cathedral for Georgie...It will be trying, but it is worth it to see people do him honor. I know you’ll be glad that all the children approved of the place where Georgie was buried...” Boldly penned and signed. Fine.
