Literary Critic May Lamberton Becker Comments on Celebrating Christmas
MAY LAMBERTON BECKER (1873-1958), Arts Critic, Editor and Author.
This undated original Autograph Letter is Signed, “ML Becker,” in fountain pen ink on personal stationery, New York City, 7” x 6”, 3 pages, Very Fine. Addressed to a “Mr. Wilde,” May Lamberton Becker offers comments on the celebration of Christmas in various parts of the country. In part: “If you mean in New England, the best Christmas of the period is in ‘Little Women.’ There wasn’t much celebration here anyway; it was still ‘Popish’: in the 50’s the mills in Fall River kept open on Christmas Day…” She also writes: “I miss my baby awfully. Marriage is fine for some people & fierce for others…” a possible reference to her daughter, Beatrice, who married and divorced in the 1920s.
May Lamberton Becker (1873-1958), American critic, editor and author. For 40 years she wrote for the New York Evening Post, the Saturday Review of Literature and the weekly book section of the New York Herald Tribune. She was a staunch supporter of Britain during World War II
