Watercolor and ink on paper, hanging scroll, featuring white owl and plum tree in early spring, signed and attributed to Yu Jigao (Chinese, b.1932), inscribed with 3 artist seals, 95 x 40 cm, Yu JiGao is a master of fine birds and flower painting at a national level. Yu's teachers were Chen ZhiFo and Fu Baoshi. Their remarkable achievement in fine brushwork of bird and flower, and also profound knowledge of art history led him to enter traditional painting. Yu is good at meticulous re-coloring birds and flowers, his works are elegant and beautiful, prosperous, filled with both refined and popular tastes, while full of flavor of the times. His works are in the collections of the Nagoya museum in Japan, China museum, Beijing Great Hall, Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, Philippine presidential palace.
