This lot provides you the opportunity to bid on an axe head believed to date to the Archaic Period (3,000-10,000 years ago). The granitic stone axe head shows a three quarter grooved pattern for hafting the axe head. Stone tools, such as this, were formed by a very labor intensive process of pecking, grinding, and polishing one stone with another. Stone axe heads have often been found in once heavily forested areas or areas still retaining native tree cover. This particular artifact was found in Southern Iowa; It had been in the same family's collection since the 1980's. The axe head measures 6 1/4" x 2 7/8" x 1 1/2". The axe head is completely intact, as shown.
