Malwa - Ujjain region, “Brahma”, Inscribed die-struck Copper, 2.94g, Obv: figure of standing man, holding bent renunciator’s staff and water pot, ‘Ujjain’-symbol to top left; Brahmi legend “Bramha” in top right corner, Rev: Sixarched hill topped by a Chhatra, traces of “Brahmi” legend below (Pieper# 410-411). Very fine, extremely rare.
Pieper describes the legend below the hill-symbol as ‘Dhavata’ but it is in all likelihood ‘Pavata’ (Parvata = hill/ mountain). It is not yet clear whether the legend ‘Brahma’ refers to the figure or it is the name of an issuing authority. The coin-type is enigmatic, very rare and significant for the study of ancient Indian polity and religion.
