Maharathi Mahahathi, lead, 7.39g, Rayalaseema, Upper Krishna Valley in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Obv: Elephant standing facing left, small Shrivatsa above its back, Brahmi legend “(Maharathisa) Mahahathisa” above, Rev: Elaborate symbol with six-arched hill in centre, ‘damaru’-shaped banner above and a tree to left, wavy line below, all enclosed in a rectangular border. Very fine for type, very rare.
Coins of Maharathis of the 'Hathi' family were discovered for the first time in Veerapuram excavations. The Hathi Maharathis, pertinently for their name, struck coins in the elephant type.
