Athens, Late Archaic, ca. 490 BC. Black-figure pottery vessel depicting Herakles battling an Amazon. Herakles in center, striding left, with shield up and quiver raised, attacks an Amazon. The Amazon faces Herakles straight on, spear in right hand (the object at her hip may be a quiver). At left, a Greek warrior wears a stilted helmet. At right, another Greek warrior in a Corinthian helmet wears a tunic, and holds a red-rimmed shield on his left arm.

On the shoulder black tongues appear below the neck. A red stripe runs around the top of the mouth. There is a net pattern above the scene. Attributed to Class of Athens 581 painter. Stands 9-1/2"H, minor chipping to base and around shoulder edge, otherwise intact with minimal wear to the scene, as shown. A very similar example can be found at theTampa Museum of Art.

Provenance: Ex-private French Collection.

This lot will be sold not subject to a reserve. The starting price is the price at which the item can sell.
