Greek, from the Apulian colonies in South Italy, ca. 4th Century BC. Black glazed pottery wine cup decorated on either side with a figure of an owl between two olive sprigs. The Owl Skyphos is one of the most iconic ceramics from the ancient Greek world, depicting as it does the manifestation of the Goddess Athena, shown as an owl perched in the sacred olive groves of Athens. The Skyphos was an ancient vessel type, used for the consumption of wine, which was often watered down in antiquity. 3"H x 5-3/4"D, chip to rim, re-attached handle.

Provenance: Ex-private New York Collection.
