American handmade under hammer cane gun with detachable shoulder stock, under hammer design, in percussion ignition, circa about 1850-1860s. The cane portion measures 31-5/8", 45-1/2" overall with stock attached. The barrel is approximately .44 cal. smooth bore. The barrel unscrews at the breech and the under hammer mechanism is very simple, whereas the trigger acts as a sear to hold the hammer when cocked, similar to NewEngland guns. The wood is stained a reddish color and is a soft wood, possibly pine, with brass sheet fittings on stock secured by screws. A simply made gun by a rural gunsmith or workshop made. An interestingcuriosity. Est.: $500-$1,000
