Union general and onetime commander of the Army of the Potomac (1824–1881); the distinctive whiskers he sported gave rise to the word 'sideburns.' LS signed “A. E. Burnside, Treas.,” one page, 5.25 x 8.5, Illinois Central Railroad Company letterhead, March 18, 1861. Letter to E. A. Benedict, in part: "Herewith notes #5746, 6 mos., $3,000, #5747, 6 mos., $2,000, for which the Co. agrees to furnish you as collateral $5,000 Peoria & Oquawka Bonds & $2,000 of V. R. Bonds as soon as the same shall be in its possession." In fine condition. In his position as treasurer of the Illinois Central Railroad, Burnside became friendly with the company's chief engineer and vice president George B. McClellan, who later became one of his commanding officers. A great letter from the month before the Civil War broke out.
