German naturalist and explorer (1769–1859) who wrote Kosmos, a massive five-volume study which attempted to unify the various branches of man's knowledge. ALS in French, signed “Humboldt,” one page, 5.25 x 8, no date. Untranslated letter to his colleague Louis Freycinet, a French navigator who in 1811 published the first full outline of the coast of Australia. In full (translated): "May I ask you to lend me for a few days the German work of Mr. Oltmann and a volume of your own work that I had returned to you. I appreciate more and more your work, to the point of asking you always something of your observations." Addressed on the reverse of the second integral page in Humboldt's hand. In fine condition. An appealing letter demonstrating the respect of one great scientist for another.
