ALFRED JODL
JODL SEEKS TO FREE THE WEHRMACHT FROM ANY COMPLICITY IN THE HOLOCAUST Important content typed D.S. "Jodl", 1p. large 4to., [Flensburg], May 16, 1945, a signed carbon. Jodl writes to the head commissioner overseeing the Flensburg Government headed by Reichs President Karl Donitz following Hitler's suicide and the German surrender. In part: "...Gross Admiral Donitz... deems it necessary to make the following decree... in order to reach a common consensus of the Wehrmacht regarding the concentration camps... we ask permission to transmit the order by radio and telegram transmission to the upper chiefs of staffs for announcement to the troops...". Chipped at top margin, toned, still very good. In early May Donitz had drafted a message to the armed forces publicly declaring that the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS had no previous knowledge of mass murders of Jews and other prisoners in the camps, and ordering all military to publicly disavow such knowledge. The Allied commissioners steadfastedly refused to allow any such announcement.
