A rare 1st Model 3rd Type breechloading single shot rifle. The 44 calibre octagonal barrel originally blued, with manually-operated extractor on right flat, the second trigger activating the tip-open mechanism. Receiver, buttplate and triggerguardnickled and engraved throughout, including owner's monogram, JS. Hammer with selective striker, folding peepsight set on actively-grained walnut butt with original finish. Atypically marked on the top flat of the barrel, FRANK WESSON WORCESTER MASS./ PAT'D OCT 25, 1859 & NOV. 11, 1862. Barrel tang inscribed, WILKESBARRE PA./ FEB'Y 22 1875, likely the presentation date. Barrel and interior of frame struck with serial number 59. Third quarter of the 19th century. Light wear. Ex-Higgins Armory Museum, Worcester, MA.Overall length 115 cm. Condition I
