A Farewell To Arms (Paramount, 1932). Lobby Card (11" X 14"). Ernest Hemingway had little use for the film adaptations of his books, partly because he had little use for films in general. The reaction varied from disinterest to disdain -- as when he reportedly punched Spencer Tracy on the set of "The Old Man and the Sea" -- and this film, based on his debut novel, provoked personal reactions across that spectrum. When he learned that theater owners were sent two copies of this film, one with a happy ending and one with the novel's melancholy closer, he became infuriated at the possibility of a tacked-on Hollywood resolution. Theaters hoping to draw Hemingway fans, mostly in the more literate cities, almost exclusively ran Hemingway's preferred ending. This clean card may be the best of the set, with all three stars -- Gary Cooper, Helen Hayes and Adolphe Menjou -- prominently featured. There's a stain in the left border, some tearing at the top edge and light crease marks on the right side, but the card will display nicely. Fine-.
